Ten years ago this month, IBM Systems Magazine published an article I wrote about modernization, titled "Refacing Challenges".
What is amazing to me is that it is still highly relevant to IBM i customers who are taking their first step into refacing. I have updated much of the approach in the sessions I present on this topic, however, the core message remains the same.
My favorite update is to the green screen rules of design. Originally two rules, I have discovered there are actually three. They are:
- There's room on the screen, stick a field in it
- There's no more room on the screen, abbreviate everything, now there is room, stick a field in it
- There's no more room on the screen, everything is abbreviated, move to 27x132, now there is room, stick a field in it.
